In The Spotlight: The Baldwin House

AIPatHome Idea Center: The Baldwin House featuring universal design and lifespan design for better aging in place

"An urban response to the suburban ranch-style house" is how owner, Architect Emory Baldwin describes the home he designed to promote aging-in-place. Located in an “urban infill” project in the Green Lake neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, it is a three-story house including the finished basement. Both the main floor and the finished basement (which is designed as a mother-in-law apartment) are accessible. The Baldwin House demonstrates the principles of Universal Design, lifespan design and flexibility that allows for the changing needs of people over time. Emory was able to implement these principles both economically and aesthetically and in a manner that a typical contractor could build this kind of house.
